What 18 open searches say about hiring in September 2026
RainesDev runs senior technical and go-to-market searches for software and IT services companies. This is what the current board looks like from the inside.
We have 18 searches open right now. Nine are go-to-market seats, eight are AI and data engineering, one is brand. That mix was not planned. It is what clients asked for between June and September, and it says more about the market than any survey.
1. The AI title inflation is over. The AI work is not.
A year ago every req had "AI" in the title and "familiarity with LLMs" in the must-haves. The reqs on the board now are specific: an AI engineering consultant who ships production RAG and agent workflows for clients, an AI architect who owns model, data, and integration decisions, an AI/LLM engineer measured on evals, not demos. The interview loops have changed to match. Take-home exercises are gone; candidates walk through a system they shipped, what broke, and what they would do differently. If a candidate cannot name the eval they used, the conversation ends there.
What this means if you are hiring: write the req around the system the person will own, not the technology list. The candidates you want self-select on scope.
2. Services firms are hiring P&L leaders, not sales leaders.
The biggest search on the board is a Head of Southeast Business Unit for a global digital engineering firm. The brief is a P&L, a portfolio of strategic and emerging accounts, and hyperscaler alliance co-sell. Not a quota. The same shape shows up in the Senior Partner Sales Manager and Business Development Director reqs: the ask is someone who builds a market, not someone who works a list.
Two reasons. Hyperscaler co-sell is now where services pipeline comes from, so the leader has to run an alliance, not just a team. And the delivery bench is smaller than it was in 2023, so the leader is expected to sell what the firm can actually staff.
What this means if you are a candidate: a regional VP title with a real P&L is the fastest path to a GM seat in this industry. Bring the portfolio numbers, not the quota attainment slide.
3. Enterprise AEs are back, and the bar is higher.
Enterprise AE for B2B SaaS, Sales Engineer for an AI platform, SDR/BDR team lead, RevOps manager: the classic SaaS org chart is hiring again after eighteen months of "do more with the team you have." The difference from 2021 is the buying process on the other side. Enterprise deals now route through a security review and, increasingly, an AI-policy review. The rep who can walk a CISO through model governance closes; the rep who needs an SE for that does not.
4. Brand is a strategy seat again.
One Brand Strategy Director search, hybrid, for a scaling company. Small sample, but it is the first brand search on our board in a long while. Companies that spent two years on performance marketing are finding that AI-generated content made every competitor sound the same, and the fix is positioning, not more volume.
5. Sponsorship and hybrid are line items, not afterthoughts.
Every search on the board states work type and sponsorship up front. Candidates ask in the first message. Companies that leave it vague lose two weeks and the best two candidates. We now put both on the role page before anyone applies.
How we run these
Every search on the board is retained or embedded. We do not post and pray. We build a target list, approach people who are not looking, and present a shortlist with our own notes on fit and risk. If you are hiring for one of these seats, or you are a candidate who matches one, the current board is at rainesdev.com/jobs. Each role has an "Interested" link that goes straight to us, not a portal.
