Unlike proprietary systems, open models put cutting-edge capability in the hands of smaller teams. That matters for the U.S. in three ways: faster innovation through collaboration, broader participation that levels the field, and real economic impact as smaller companies adopt AI affordably. China's progress relies heavily on centralized funding. The U.S. thrives in a decentralized, collaborative environment.
The shift to cheaper compute
For years NVIDIA's GPUs were the expensive backbone of AI. That is changing. Optimized models need less power, custom chips from Google and others handle AI workloads more efficiently, and distributed systems spread work across cheaper machines. NVIDIA is not going anywhere, but the landscape is evolving and the U.S. has an opportunity to lead on cost-effective solutions.
The talent problem: speed and scale
AI talent is in short supply and every company feels it. The U.S. has tens of thousands of unfilled AI roles. Internal recruiting teams are a good start but rarely enough: limited reach, and too slow for a race that moves in days.
This is where specialized staffing earns its place. Firms embedded in the AI talent market have deep networks, can source faster and at higher volume, and can reach the niche experts who are not actively looking. Companies that combine internal recruiting with external expertise will outpace competitors in hiring the best talent.
Why the U.S. wins
Open collaboration, world-class universities, aggressive private-sector competition, and big national goals. China's progress is real, but these advantages are durable.
